We aim to use natural resources efficiently and minimize the environmental impacts of our activities and products during their lifecycles. We also participate in major market take-back programs to dispose properly of unused drugs. Our structured approach to environmental impact has increased our progress; while sales have doubled since 1997, we have reduced the growth rate of our consumption of energy and water.
Novartis is fully committed to providing safe workplaces for all its associates and Third Party Personnel. Since 2004, we have continuously expanded our reporting base from major manufacturing sites to include head offices and sales representatives. In 2007, we covered 94% of all Novartis associates in our HSE Report.
By end of 2007, 29 Novartis sites out of 196 reporting units worldwide had remained accident-free for more than four years. Such stellar safety performance owe as much to management attention and well-trained associates as to elaborately engineered systems. Indeed, safety culture and behavior based safety programs are increasingly seen as key to the continued improvement of occupational health and safety over the coming years.
Novartis recognizes its responsibility to promote the health not only of its associates, but also of Third Party Personnel. In 2007, the number of injuries or fatalities in this group is shown separately.
Novartis sets HSE targets covering periods of at least three years to allow better analysis, planning and program implementation. Each division and business unit within Novartis reviews progress annually. The divisions and business units are also involved in target-setting based on recommendations by functional experts.
Fighting against meningitidis by finding novel treatments is one of Novartis Vaccines priority.
